Journals, Journals, Everywhere!

The other day a friend of mine on Facebook posted about how Facebook seems to be a personal, yet public, journal and then proceeded to ask how many people on her friends list actually still used a normal pen-to-paper journal. I was the first to admit that yes i do still keep a journal and let me explain why.

In high school when my mother had signed me up to see a psychologist weekly, he had suggested that i keep a journal. I explained that things like that were not possible because i had two, very snoopy, very sneaky, younger twin sisters. He looked at me and said;

“And that is stopping you, why?”

Before i could answer him, he turned around and dug around in his desk looking for something. When he found what he was looking for he turned around and handed me a lighter. I sat there just staring at it. The ugliest lighter i had ever seen, bile yellow and completely full with lighter fluid. I guess i was in shock that an adult was handing me a lighter, almost like he was telling me to commit arson. I started to ask him what i was supposed to do with an ugly ass lighter but he stopped me and said;

” Sharon, if there is nothing for them to find, then they cant read it.If you write something down and you dont want it read, burn the pages and let them float away. You get them out and let your anger float away like the pages.”

BRILLIANT MAN!

So since then i have always kept a journal and occasionally, on the days i write to get anger out, and say things i dont mean i still burn those pages. But my journal collection continues to grow and i find myself burning pages less and less. While on blogging for books i found a Q&A a Day journal almost like the last ones i reviewed for B4B but its SO MUCH BETTER!!! Its for artists! Or maybe not just artists but those who feel like doodling! I absolutely love it! Its a four year journal and every page has a writing prompt, you draw how you see that prompt and fill in the year of that entry! Since i have been doing more drawings i thought it would be a great addition to my other new “artsy” journals. I just recently got a wreck this journal box set that included Wreck This Journal, Mess, This Is Not A Book and Pocket Scavenger! Brilliant journals and i have no shame in admitting i WRECK those journals! If your a journal writer or havent started or wrote in one for a long time i highly suggest every one of them! They are fun and give you ways to get those feelings out and sometimes without even knowing you are doing it! Read on, Bookworms!Snapshot_20150824

How many women work out a few months before summer just to look hot!?

I’m back!!!!!! again with another book review courtesy of blogging for books! So lately i have been hit with this workout bug! And keep in mind i am NOT doing this for summer! I am however doing this because… well… frankly im tired of being fat. I was asked yesterday what my bmi is. If you have no clue what a bmi is It is your Body Mass Index. And mine was at a skyrocketing 48.8…. That is HUGE!!! No pun intended. So before this conversation i had plotted on doing yoga and after one sitting of Yoga For Dummies ( no thank you) i realized i needed something a little more intense. Dont get me wrong. I love yoga! It always seems to help me pop the joints that are stuck in Bitch-You-Are-NOT-Getting-Up Mode but i have a lot of weight to lose so i think yoga would be a post weight loss thing. Anyway! Long over due book review!

Okay… don’t hate me but I have been away for a while… I know, I know, how dare you right!? I have had so much happening mentally i just couldn’t be around. So i have a Blogging for Books book review for every one and I wasn’t that excited about reading this after starting it. The book is called A Fifty Year Silence By Miranda Richmond Mouillot. Now I am a huge fan of reading about other peoples history and that is what originally drew me into the idea of this book. This is the synopsis I read prior to selecting this book:

A young woman moves across an ocean to uncover the truth about her grandparents’ mysterious estrangement and pieces together the extraordinary story of their wartime experiences

In 1948, after surviving World War II by escaping Nazi-occupied France for refugee camps in Switzerland, the author’s grandparents, Anna and Armand, bought an old stone house in a remote, picturesque village in the South of France. Five years later, Anna packed her bags and walked out on Armand, taking the typewriter and their children. Aside from one brief encounter, the two never saw or spoke to each other again, never remarried, and never revealed what had divided them forever.

A Fifty-Year Silence is the deeply involving account of Miranda Richmond Mouillot’s journey to find out what happened between her grandmother, a physician, and her grandfather, an interpreter at the Nuremberg Trials, who refused to utter his wife’s name aloud after she left him.  To discover the roots of their embittered and entrenched silence, Miranda abandons her plans for the future and moves to their stone house, now a crumbling ruin; immerses herself in letters, archival materials, and secondary sources; and teases stories out of her reticent, and declining, grandparents.  As she reconstructs how Anna and Armand braved overwhelming odds and how the knowledge her grandfather acquired at Nuremberg destroyed their relationship, Miranda wrestles with the legacy of trauma, the burden of history, and the complexities of memory.  She also finds herself learning how not only to survive but to thrive – making a home in the village and falling in love.

With warmth, humor, and rich, evocative details that bring her grandparents’ outsize characters and their daily struggles vividly to life, A Fifty-Year Silence is a heartbreaking, uplifting love story spanning two continents and three generations.

This book is just not as interesting as the title suggests and i think that the author could have done a much better job at writing it. But I have to give credit where credit is due, Despite the lack of seemingly promised revelation/resolution, the book is an interesting, portrait of two very strong-willed individuals whose very strength in surviving 1940s France as Jews is also their fatal flaw. When the author is exploring her grandparents, their histories and their fraught relationship, she is at her best. But she spends quite a bit of the book focused on herself, as if she is unable to develop her own identity without first fleshing out theirs. These sections come across as quite self-absorbed and are a bit of a chore to plod through. The author has had the privileges and advantages of wealth and security, so her struggles to “make a home” out of her grandparents’ ruined house in France comes across a bit like an elite Peace Corps volunteer who both takes her rugged assignment seriously, but also has the luxury to leave the rough life and kick back with her friends.

Now would i recommend this book? Yes to those who are completely enthralled in Jewish history and heritage but no to anyone who needs a quick read! I received this book free from blogging for books in exchange for an honest book review! And as always the buying link will be included but keep reading my fellow bookworms!

Random blog post from a random blogger for random blog followers!

So I have had a lot going on lately and I realized after speaking with a friend of mine that I haven’t posted in a while… So I am here and have a few things to say….

Big news: 1. I have reached over 100 followers here on wordpress (round of applause) So a big thank you to all of you amazing followers for making me feel like I have hit a milestone I never thought would happen! 2. I had a job interview yesterday but I will get into that a little later. 3. You are all amazing and 4. I have had a few new books to add to my collection!

~ Amazing Followers for my amazing blog!~

So I currently have 105 followers and I couldnt be more excited! When I first started blogging I thought ” Man I am going to be at this a while before I start getting anywhere”, and even though that has proven to be true I hit 100 followers before I though it would sooooo YAY!!!! lol! My most dedicated follower has come to be one of my favorite fellow bloggers and it kinda makes you stop and think about how small this world really is. As a blogger you connect with fellow bloggers or people with questions and you know that you at least have one thing in common. You both either blog or you are both either into the same types of things.

Well that’s how my relationship started with Miss Stephanie of The Readers Oasis. Now I came to the conclusion that yes we are both bloggers but we are both also book obsessed! I also found out that not only are we both about the same age but that we have very similar lifestyles. And even though she lives in a very busy city, and I in a very small town she displays so many of the same characteristics as me and that alone makes her pretty awesome! If you haven’t had the opportunity yet to follow her please go wander on over to her blog and take a look at some of her posts because you just might get to know her the way I do and I am sure you will like her just as much if not more! ~ You Are All AMAZING~

Since I have started THMH I have come in contact with amazing writers, bloggers, fans and great giveaways and I would love to do the same on my blog! Just a heads up to all of you… I am hoping and praying that in a few months I will be able to get up about 20-30 authors to do some giveaways and if i can I would like to hope that whoever does win anything that you would kindly give any and all feedback for each author, if they are your favorite author or you liked or disliked their work. Now if that goes well and doesn’t completely drain anyone I would like to do a bigger giveaway in December with either all of the books I have reviewed or 60 different authors! I mean who wouldn’t love to win free books from amazing writers!

~Blue Collar Woman~

Like i stated at the beginning of this post I had a job interview yesterday. Now this is a hard subject for me because I haven’t been employed for a while now. I had posted something on my Facebook about my interview and I can honestly say I was scared to see responses. Most of the content I share on Facebook doesn’t get much attention and I am okay with that. But yesterday I was amazed to see that 30 people liked the post alone. I was scared however because I didn’t want one of my family members to ask what business the interview was for. My family does not consist of bad, stuck up people. It is comprised of strong, dedicated individuals who have made so much of themselves through hard work and dedication. My family has created their own businesses and its hard for me to let them know that their 25 year old sister, daughter, aunt, granddaughter or cousin could only be receiving a job working at Taco Bell. I was lucky that no one did ask and I felt like I had so much support from everyone yesterday but while I was in bed last night I just had this feeling that if my family knew they would be disappointed that that is as far as I have made it in life. I’m hoping to hear back from someone soon so until then I am sure I will feel this way. Stupid feelings.

Synopsis:

When Orhan’s brilliant and eccentric grandfather Kemal—a man who built a dynasty out of makingkilim rugs—is found dead, submerged in a vat of dye, Orhan inherits the decades-old business. But Kemal’s will raises more questions than it answers. He has left the family estate to a stranger thousands of miles away, an aging woman in an Armenian retirement home in Los Angeles. Her existence and secrecy about her past only deepen the mystery of why Orhan’s grandfather willed his home in Turkey to an unknown woman rather than to his own son or grandson.

Left with only Kemal’s ancient sketchbook and intent on righting this injustice, Orhan boards a plane to Los Angeles. There he will not only unearth the story that eighty-seven-year-old Seda so closely guards but discover that Seda’s past now threatens to unravel his future. Her story, if told, has the power to undo the legacy upon which his family has been built.

Blogging For Books Book Review #2

As a young kid i always looked forward to coming home from school and watching Ripleys believe it or not. There was just something about seeing weird people all around the world that made me feel a little more normal around other people. As much as it helped me feel average compared to all the other little booger pickers, I never put any thought to who Robert Ripley was… Honestly I thought his name was Ripley… odd name for an odd guy… it fit right?
I explained last post about Blogging for Books and i honest to Pete love this site… and its only my second book!lol But its a start to making my “Beauty and the Beast” library. Anyway, this week i ordered A Curious Man: The Strange and Brilliant Life of Robert “Believe It or Not!” Ripley. I had my heart set on one book but saw this and clicked faster than my brain could say stop… But compared to my last book i loved it!!!!
I think what did it for me was the fact that the author didn’t seem to keep details out of the picture… You get what could possibly be the entire story of Mr. Robert Ripley. Neal Thompson covered everything from his complicated childhood, to his heyday as a one-man multi-media powerhouse to the unfortunate personal decline and demise, and finally, through his still-vibrant legacy. To any fans, or people like me ( a 90’s kid) this is a definite read…. well of course unless you have never heard of him… in which case… good him, read about him and then one click this baby and read more about him!!! Thanks for spending some time with me and he if you wanna know more about Blogging for Books or just wanna say whats going on… HIT ME UP!!!! I love getting to know people and who follows me! Below is the book synopsis and the amazon page in which you can buy it or sample it!

**A Curious Man: The Strange and Brilliant Life of Robert “Believe It or Not!” Ripley Synopsis**
A Curious Man is the marvelously compelling biography of Robert “Believe It or Not” Ripley, the enigmatic cartoonist turned globetrotting millionaire who won international fame by celebrating the world’s strangest oddities, and whose outrageous showmanship taught us to believe in the unbelievable.

As portrayed by acclaimed biographer Neal Thompson, Ripley’s life is the stuff of a classic American fairy tale. Buck-toothed and cursed by shyness, Ripley turned his sense of being an outsider into an appreciation for the strangeness of the world. After selling his first cartoon to Time magazine at age eighteen, more cartooning triumphs followed, but it was his “Believe It or Not” conceit and the wildly popular radio shows it birthed that would make him one of the most successful entertainment figures of his time and spur him to search the globe’s farthest corners for bizarre facts, exotic human curiosities, and shocking phenomena.

Ripley delighted in making outrageous declarations that somehow always turned out to be true—such as that Charles Lindbergh was only the sixty-seventh man to fly across the Atlantic or that “The Star Spangled Banner” was not the national anthem. Assisted by an exotic harem of female admirers and by ex-banker Norbert Pearlroth, a devoted researcher who spoke eleven languages, Ripley simultaneously embodied the spirit of Peter Pan, the fearlessness of Marco Polo and the marketing savvy of P. T. Barnum.

In a very real sense, Ripley sought to remake the world’s aesthetic. He demanded respect for those who were labeled “eccentrics” or “freaks”—whether it be E. L. Blystone, who wrote 1,615 alphabet letters on a grain of rice, or the man who could swallow his own nose.

By the 1930s Ripley possessed a vast fortune, a private yacht, and a twenty-eight room mansion stocked with such “oddities” as shrunken heads and medieval torture devices, and his pioneering firsts in print, radio, and television were tapping into something deep in the American consciousness—a taste for the titillating and exotic, and a fascination with the fastest, biggest, dumbest and most weird. Today, that legacy continues and can be seen in reality TV, YouTube, America’s Funniest Home Videos, Jackass, MythBusters and a host of other pop-culture phenomena.

In the end Robert L. Ripley changed everything. The supreme irony of his life, which was dedicated to exalting the strange and unusual, is that he may have been the most amazing oddity of all.

New to the blogging scene but here i go!!

My name is Sharon Mccumber and I have been plotting on the blogging scene for a while now and am just now getting started. I am 24 years old and I live in Northern Indiana ( Cali born and raised though). Currently I am a stay at home girlfriend to the worlds most amazing man!!! We have been together for over 2 years now and I am happier than I have ever been. I grew up in a very quiet town in northern California called Marysville and its about and hour north of Sacramento. I was adopted by my great aunt who also adopted my little sisters and raised us to always believe you could make something of yourself if you tried hard enough. Unfortunately she passed a little over a year ago and i miss her like crazy! But life happens i guess and even though she is gone she will never ever be forgotten. She was the one who taught me to do so many arts and crafts projects, and how NOT to cut my hair lol. (Side note to the younger readers: If your mother says she is going to give you a farrah fawcett haircut…. RUN). And my Great Grandmother Roxy brought out my love of music. And I always figured i got my love of books from my father. But i think the most important thing in my life right now is my love for myself. Most people wont understand unless they knew more of my story but up until recently i use to hate myself and the way i looked but thanks to some amazing family, a super awesome boyfriend and my best friend Sam Sam, I’m starting to pull myself out of my hermit shell 🙂 So if you read this blog and continue to read this blog for however long you will more than likely see a ton of those things among so many others… and while I’m at this point I want to personally think every single person reading this!

                                                                                                       ~For the love of hobbies~

As someone who stays at home while my significant other works (bless his heart) i find that i get bored really easy so i though of everything i know how to do and i work on perfecting them!

~Crocheting: to make (a garment or piece of fabric) using crochet. I have been doing crocheting since i was in my early teens. I never got the hang of knitting but when im stressed, crocheting always helps.

~Corseting: to regulate strictly with a corset, can be combined with a regular diet. I actually just started at the beggining of this year and i love it. Some women think corsets are just for show and as a bigger woman i dont feel that way but it makes me feel better wearing one and would incourage anyone who has questions or has thought about it to definitely look into it or try it.

~D.I.Y. : “Do It Yourself”. I absolutly love D.I.Y projects… That is usually what i get on pinterest for.

~Sampling: Receiving products free of charge in the mail to try and keep!!!! Myself and my best friend Sam Sam ( who i talk about a ton) generally do this together and haul in a ton of free samples of all different sizes every month…. *This will be talked about alot.

~ Music:  an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm,     melody, harmony, and color. I love to sing and am playing music almost more than i breath lol.

~ Nails, Makeup, Hair : On most of these i will probably be getting help from Sam Sam and do what i can with tutorials 🙂

~ Books: I am a 100%, to-the-core Book Worm and am currently a member of a group on facebook called Book Worms Unite. This group is full of lively, amazing, beautiful women who love books as much as i do!!! I know any other book lovers would appreciate this awesome group so i will throw in the link for anyone who wants to join! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1440059426233324/?fref=nf
